| On Hospitals and random medical ailments... |
[Apr. 27th, 2009|04:57 pm] |
So, yeah, the hospital. Had to head there Friday night with some tightness in my chest and turned out that it was being caused by my red blood count being super low (apparently very close to ICU low, according to one doctor). For some reason, still unknown despite a bunch of tests over the weekend, my immune system started producing antibodies sometime 3-4 weeks or so ago that were attacking my own red cells. Since those carry oxygen to my body, as they decreased, I had less stamina, was getting more tired, and it apparently manifested itself in chest tightness, exhaustion, and some degree of mental confusion. I didn't notice it because the few symptoms I did notice, I just chalked up to being tired. I did notice being more winded than usual the past two weeks at games after the stairs and thought it weird that I kept getting tired to the point of napping after being awake only 4-6 hours every day, but again, just chalked it up to being bored/sedantary/etc.
Anywho, 5 units of blood, a bunch of blood tests, two CT scans, and 3 days later, I'm back home with some meds that should help control it some. The hope is that they can cut back on them as they learn more about how fast my body is making these antibiodies and I'm hoping that they can maybe find what triggered it in the first place. Thankfully, right now it doesn't appear to be one of the more serious postential causes, like cancer or a viral infection, but they otherwise just don't know. Apparently, this can be triggered by any number of things, including that my immune system just went wacko one day.
In any case, I'm home again and, apart from being a little tired due to not sleeping much Friday or Saturday (maybe a combined 4-5 hours total), I'm feeling fine. |

[Dec. 28th, 2008|12:53 am] |
I know I haven't posted in, well, forever and I'm not really updating much here either. The short version is lost my job in November thanks to crap economy slowing sales and being the low man on the totem pole. Everything else has been status quo.
What I'm posting mainly about here is an amazing video someone made using World of Warcraft models. Even if you don't like the game, watch it...particularly if you like martial arts fights. It's REALLY well done.

| The Juggernaut |
[Oct. 3rd, 2007|01:04 pm] |
I tried a pizza last night that might be the worst thing I could eat (not taste-wise, more nutrition-wise).
It's called the Juggernaut, mostly because you should probably be one to eat it.
Essentially, take a pepperoni pizza. Add an appetizer platter from a place like TGI Fridays. Combine.
It's a pepperoni pizza with cut up bits of chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, and mac-n-cheese bites all over the top.
It was oh so wrong, yet oh so right. LOL
That said, I'm avoiding it in the future because I fear how much badness was contained within it's pastry-like crust. |

| Chicken Kiev and WoW |
[Sep. 25th, 2007|04:59 pm] |
I tried it for the first time last night. I don't know why it's taken me so long. There really isn't any part of it I wouldn't like. Chicken stuffed with a little butter, garlic, and herbs, lightly breaded and baked. There's just no part I wouldn't like. I got it at a store that's connected to a restaurant nearby. They serve 1/2 and 3/4 cooked items that they'd normally serve in the restaurant. I stopped by on a whim and I'm glad I did. YUM.
Have I mentioned I've missed WoW? I feel a little lost, trying to take in 4 months of missed new content all at once (as well as get into a new guild and update all the people who had wondered where I vanished to). |

| Bursts of info! |
[Sep. 23rd, 2007|12:03 pm] |
Just some updates on what's been going on and what's been on my mind lately:
- Still working part-time at the game company. Still would like them to hire me on full-time, so I wouldn't be paying away so much for health insurance. Plus, I really like it there.
- I finally sat down and got the parts for the new computer and got them to my IT buddy, Nate, who put it all together over the weekend. I'm going to go pick it up tonight. May be interesting getting it back in the house on my own, though.
- Just had to chance my insurance again, after signing up just a month ago for Tufts through the Mass Health Connector. Of course, it didn't work out the way I wanted. After paying nearly $400, I get a call on the 12th of September that the doctor I had picked out isn't part of that plan. Huhwhat? I looked him up on the Tufts web site, under doctors under their HMO plan. Well, APPARENTLY, the HMO is an HMO SELECT. Apparently, what the "Select" part means is "almost no doctors accept this." I check with this lady on my other two doctors and neither of them take it either. In fact, there's only -ONE- PCP doctor within 10 miles of me that accepts the plan. SOOOO, I sign up for a different (more expensive) plan through Harvard Community, pick my PCP, and finally get it squared away for October. Of course, the money I paid for September...gone. So, I essentially dropped $400 for insurance and have it in writing only, since I have no PCP. :P
Have I mentioned I hate our health care system?
- I think I've gone to the movies more this summer than I have the past year. Of course, it helped that I had a free pass a few times, but still kinda odd for movie. I saw Transformers, The Simpsons, and Rush Hour 3. Funny thing is, there were at least another 2-3 I would've liked to see. Hooray Netflix! I'll see them soon enough. |

| Greatest Opening to a movie EVER... |
[Aug. 13th, 2007|11:54 pm] |
Spoiler warning to those who haven't yet seen the Aqua Teens Movie!!!!!!
This has ZERO to do with the movie, but I know some people don't want to see ANY part of a movie unless they're seeing the whole thing.
This is a clip from the beginning of the movie, before the initial opening with the Aqua Teens. It was one of my favorite parts of the movie and I'd love to see this at the beginning of every movie. :)
NSFW, due to some spicy language and, well, you shouldn't be Youtubing at work, I suspect.

Matt, I think you'll enjoy this... ;)
EDIT: Had to change the link. The other one has apparently been taken down. |

| Random notes... |
[Aug. 13th, 2007|12:38 am] |
- I have a new favorite show...Code Monkeys on G4tv. 8-bit cartoon about a video game company in the early 80's. Maybe because I've worked in video games, played a bunch, or just that I'm a huge dork. Whatever the reason, this show comes off as hilarious to me.
- Went to Unity Games XIII this weekend and it was a blast. Played a mess of new-to-me games and found a few I or someone in my game group need to get.
- Went out for Dad's birthday to Bertucci's tonight. Pretty yummy. Had some kind of baked tortellini with chicken. I got Dad the new Michael Holley book about Teddi Bruschi.
- Saw Transformers on Friday. Might be one of the best movies I've seen in the past two years. Extremely well done. I'll probably buy it when it comes out and hope to hell they'll make a second one as good as the first. |

| Illinois is stupid... |
[Jul. 23rd, 2007|06:37 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | aggravated | ] | ...Or, at least whoever runs their toll system is.
So, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I was out there last weekend for Dan and Anne's wedding. While out there, I had to travel on the I294 toll road. Most toll roads have tollbooths with people to take your toll and let you know in advance how much the toll is. Well, Illinois doesn't like to do that so much. They have people at the booths on the main road, but if you take any exits, for the most part, there's no one there. There's only automated coin-taker machines and a few lanes for people that have their transponder thing. Tolls on the road are all 80 cents. Soooo, if you don't have correct change, you're hosed. You just have to drive through and send the toll to them later. Oh, but don't forget to take down the date, time, and location of the booth or you can't pay online. Oh, and you only have 7 days to pay. Oh, and they don't actually tell you until like 1/4 mi. from the exit that there's no one there, so there's no possible way to get change before you get there. Oh and they don't actually TELL you that you need to take down the info and that you can't remit the toll online without it.
WTF?!?
So, I get home and try going online to try maybe looking up the info on what I owe based on my license plate/make/model/whatever, since that'd be the SMART thing to let folks do. Nope. So then I try calling the number on the site. Automated menu hell...apparently, they don't want you to actually TALK to a PERSON to resolve your problem. So then I try a different number on their site and get more automated crap, but eventually find an option to talk to a person. EXCEPT that it clicks immediately to a mailbox and answering message, which then boots you back to the automated menus once done, since the mailbox is full. I then try the option to talk to someone "on the covering extension." Except that line is ALWAYS listed as busy (I tried four times over multiple days). SO I use my last option and e-mail them. I get a response back that says they can't look up the info I need, but I should be able to find it on the site (WRONG!).
Wow...They crafted a system where people from out-of-state get screwed over hard. Nice. Don't let us talk to anyone who might actually HELP us.
So, I sent a letter with the info I have and a check for $2.40. I don't know what else I can possibly do. It'll be interesting to see if the state tries to hit Budget with fees or something. Personally, the fact that no one at Budget warned me about the road at all makes me a little unhappy anyway, but I just can't figure out how they let a system that's so broken and idiotic be put in place. |

| Birthdays and Reflections... |
[Jul. 22nd, 2007|11:07 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | contemplative | ] | So, I'm older. Woot.
The big 3-0.
I figured I should look back to see what's happened in the past decade before I look ahead for what will happen in the next.
High points of the last ten years: - Graduating with my Associate's and Bachelor's degrees - Beating Cancer - Going out with a few wonderful women - Experiencing love - Working at a place full-time for the first time with many very cool people
Low points of the last ten years: - All things medical (about 6-8 minor/major operations, countless tests, drugs that almost killed me, etc) - Getting let go from a job for the first time - Dealing with my basement apartment flooding 3 times, the last of which claiming all my furniture and a bunch of my stuff - Getting in a head-on accident - Having my heart broken multiple times - Job-hunting - Dealing with anxiety and depression
Things I've learned in the last ten years: - If you live in a low-level apartment, put nothing you really like within 2 feet of the floor - Love is very much a double-edged blade. It's simultaneously the best feeling, yet can make you do things you wouldn't normally do (in my case, put up with stuff I shouldn't have) - Sometimes, the only thing you can do about things is shrug them off as best as possible - I need to stay more calm when bad stuff happens. I need to learn to stay more cool and collected - I need to be more patient and understanding. I can be a bit of an arrogant git at times and I need to work on that. - Friends and family are two of the most important things in life. Without them, life would lose a lot of its color and brightness - I need to not let my inner-demons control me. Rage, anger, sadness, doubt, regret, worry...they all love to come out and cut me down and hold me back at various times. I need to learn to confront them. I know they likely will never fully go away, but I can't let them drag me down the way I have in the past - I need to learn to open up even more. I learned to be more open after dealing with cancer, but I still need to be more outgoing. I need to get past the walls I put up and extend myself outward towards people more. - I need to love again. Though right now, my situation isn't stable enough that I'd want to start dating again, once it is, I should. I can't let the hurt of past relationships prevent me from being in one again. The rewards of love outweigh the risk of hurt. - I can't let my physical disabilities prevent me from doing things. I know there's a lot I can't do, but it doesn't mean I shouldn't get out and do what I can. Too often, I let worry dominate what I can and can't do.
All-in-all, things could've been better, but certainly could've gone far, far worse. I hope in the next decade to find a steady job, a place of my own, and someone to love who loves me. I know nothing comes easy and I fully expect that I'll have to deal with more medically, but I just have to take it one step at a time.

| | blah | ] | Both of em (Ortho and infectious disease).
First one up was the infection doc. Not much new on that front. They just asked if my knee was still bugging me (yup) and if I'd been taking the antibiotics regularly (yup). They also asked if I'd been having any trouble with the meds (nope) and said they wanted to do some blood tests to make sure my liver and kidneys are taking it ok, as well as check the C-reactor levels and sedimentation rate. Mostly just means they want to make sure they're going down or staying level and not spiking up again (meaning meds not working, mostly). Primarily, I just learned that my stint on these meds may last past the end of the year and may extend potentially to a full year, though that will be assessed later. Meh...whatevers.
Then went down, got my X-rays, and headed to the Ortho doc. That meeting was slightly more informative. First off, the infection is actually more in the knee, it appears, and not between the metal and bone, as the infection doc told me. I also learned that the Ortho doc isn't going to do anything unless it's necessary, because my leg will only allow a few more surguries and if he did go in, it means all the metal needs to come out, which is rough and likely means less to work with in the lower leg. So, mostly, he's going to just wait and watch and only do something if it needs to be done. THe other interesting bit is that the CT scan on Monday showed a 5mm "nodule" in my lung. This could be the start of something or could be nothing at all. The problem is, the report back from radiology was conflicting (said left side, then said right not 3 paragraphs later and my doc could see neither). So, for now, we're gonna wait and CT scan me again in 3 months and see if it's still there/bigger. If so, then he'll refer me to an Oncologist who can take a look and determine if it's something that needs to be tested/biopsied or if it's nothing.
So yeah...30 in 3 days and all this stuff to look forward to. Joy. |

Sure, it's still gonna be on his record and he'll have to pay a 1/4 million dollar fine, but who the hell cares? From what I've read today, many think the president will likely have it expunged from his record with a pardon before he leaves office, which I think means he doesn't need to pay the fine either.
Wow, what a great lesson to learn here...So, apparently if you help a corrupt, power-mad administration do whatever the hell it wants and then lie about it and obstruct justice and inquest into it, you too can be pardoned and the whole group of you can get away with screwing over the system.
Can we please impeach George fucking Bush now? I'm sick of this retard and his cronies doing whatever the fuck they want. |

| | confused | ] | Someone will have to explain this to me...
Why do people go to movies that are essentially nothing but depressing? Apparently, people don't have enough problems or sad stuff that they need to watch a 2 hour reminder?
I ask this because I just watched "Pursuit of Happiness." While the acting is great, the movie is mostly just one sad event after another. By the halfway part of the movie, I was dividing my time between computer and movie because watching the movie only was far too depressing. I can appareciate the plot and message and loved the ending, but ugh... I think this is why I mostly watch comedies or action movies. Call me simple-minded, but when I watch a movie, I want to be entertained. I want to forget the troubles of the world and daily life and enjoy myself. I've only watched one movie that I can remember that was a downer at all that I truly enjoyed...Wit (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243664/). The only reason I liked it at all because the writer(s) so nicely captured the feelings and frustrations I had while undergoing chemotherapy. |

| Where has customer service gone? (sorry...it's long) |
[Jun. 20th, 2007|10:56 pm] |
Seriously, I've had 2 incidents of bad customer service in two days now and it kinda (read as REALLY) pisses me off. When did the customer become a problem for company's instead of an asset to covet?
Incident 1 ----------
Recently, my computer had "issues." After much tech testing at Best Buy, the tech narrowed to something small (like a capacitor) frying. Anyway, so I talk it over with my folks and decide I'm going to get a new computer. It's not going to be anything super or extravagant, just decent and usable. So, after 4 days of perusing 8-9 web-based custom computer sites and making a similar build on each of them, I get a decent build down to a smidge over $1200 with free shipping from ibuypower.com. I call them and talk over my build and find out everything should work together fine (great customer service). I place the order and receive updates each time my computer progresses along each stage (building, QA, burn test, etc...also great customer service). My computer gets shipped out and arrives a few days later. It looks great, runs quiet and cool, and appears to be working fine. I load a few programs (Halo, Deus Ex, Firefox, Ventrillo) and have no problems, all work fine. Then I try loading World of Warcraft. Load and patch it all, get on for about 5 minutes and it crashes. I try restarting it, it crashes again and then blue screen of death. So, I peruse the WoW site and learn it's likely a corrupt file due to either a mod, a bad install, or hardware. So I uninstall, scan my HD, run a diag, and everything seems to be fine. I try reloading it all again. Play for 5 minutes, crash again. Slightly different crash and forums point to the likelihood of a bad HD or RAM. As I'm reading this on Firefox, it crashes with a corrupt file. Now it won't restart either.
Soooo, time to call the company. I call tech support and he start mentioning opening the case and playing with the RAM. I immediately say, "but shouldn't that have been checked to see if it worked BEFORE it shipped?" He tells me it could just be a bad one or be a loose good one. I ask the same question again, since I don't understand how Bad RAM would or should get through their QA if they're testing it at all. He refers me to customer service. Ok...I call them and wait 30 minutes. I finally talk to someone and begin explaining that I just got this, loaded some programs and it worked fine, load WoW, it crashes, blue screen's, etc. He tells me I need tech support. I say no, I want to get this fixed, since it's still under it's warranties. I then ask how is there QA letting computers with bad parts go out. He starts trying to tell me that no company produces things that work 100% of the time, there are some defects, etc, etc. I agree with him, but point out that they said my computer went through both QA and a burn test and that anyone with decent diagnostic programs would be able to tell if either RAM or HD was bad and that their testing must not be adequate enough if they're letting non-working computers ship. He tells me they can ship me RAM or HD and tech support can walk me through fixing it if they're broken. I tell him if he bought a car that had a busted transmission, the mechanic doesn't hand you a transmission and wrench and say, "this is how you fix it." They take the car in and make it work. He tells me if I want to ship it back to them, they'll fix the problem and return my computer. I say ok, they cover shipping then? He says only shipping it back. I start losing it. I ask why I should have to pay to ship it back, since it's under warranty for both parts and labor and they didn't ship me a working product in the first place. He asks why they should have to lose money on shipping, that sometimes parts are just defective, but that's not their fault. I say I agree, but it is your fault if you ship a computer that's not tested enough to make sure it all works properly.
It's then he says the DUMBEST thing to tell an already justifiably unhappy customer. "Sir, you're wasting both your and my time."
I explode.
I state you have to be kidding me...I'm the customer calling with a legitimate complaint about both your product and your procedure and I'M wasting YOUR time? He claims he's asked me 5 times for a customer number (it's the first I've heard him ask for anything). I tell him that to hell with fixing it, I want to outright return the damned thing because I refuse to deal with any company that tells a customer with a problem that I'm wasting their time. I tell him the info he needs, he gives me some code, and we quickly finish the call. I was borderline shaking in anger. I haven't been that angry in a LONG time. So, the computer ships back tomorrow, the credit card company has been called and a hold of some sort put on the funds (they agreed that they'd never heard of any customer service person saying something like that). So, the lesson here kiddies is if you or anyone you know is looking for a computer, DON'T buy from ibuypower.com unless you want to go through the crap I went through.
Incident 2 ----------
Less of a deal, but annoying still. I called last night (later, after a few hours cooldown period) to get plane tickets to Chicago in July for a wedding. I needed to use U.S. Air, since I have a voucher with them for either a free flight in the continental 48 or $200 off. So, I go online, find some fares, and call. Talk to a guy and get things set up. They have no seats for a free flight (whatever), but are able to set me up with times I want and it'll only cost me about $175 round trip. He gives me the confirmation code and tells me I need to go to a ticket window to turn in the voucher by Friday. Fine... I head into Logan today (stuff this morning made me end up taking a day off I hadn't planned on), I wait in line for 25-30 minutes, get to the ticket counter, and give my confirmation code figuring I'll be out in 2-3 more minutes.
"Sorry, that code is invalid." *blink* I read it to her again (I made sure to double-check it with the guy on the phone before hanging up...I know it's right). Nope...nothing. I tell her I just got it last night, that I talked to a guy on their phone service for 15-20 minutes working this all out. She tells me the return flight he told me about isn't eligible to be used with the voucher and he likely found it out after hanging up with me and, rather than call and tell me, just moved on to another call. I fight to control my frustration. Luckily, she WAS good and helpful and got me close to what I had (I come back earlier than I wanted, but I'll make it work). Ugh...
So, to those working in customer service:
Look, I know taking calls from us sucks, that more than a few customers are indeed assholes. However, most of us just want what we paid for and are trying to keep cool about it despite being inconvenienced. However, telling us that we're "wasting your time" or simply not doing anything with information after working with someone for 20 minutes on plans to get to a friend's wedding is NOT good customer service. |

| Updates, updates everywhere! |
[Jun. 15th, 2007|06:22 pm] |
Well, I've been told I haven't updated in a while, so here's the breakdown:
- So, the maroon Chevy died in January while driving to game night. I never liked the car anyway, but it got me where I needed to go. I lucked out some, though, and after cashing in the bonds I got when I was a baby/lil kid, I managed to get a pretty nice little used 2004 Hyundai Elantra.
- Got a new computer after my old one had something on the motherboard die. :(
- Job-wise, I've been working part time at a small, local game company on a marketing project. Mostly means lots of phone calling and some box packing and shipping. There's been lots of major hinting about bringing me on full time, but nothing for sure yet.
- Socially...um...*crickets* Yeah...haven't dated in YEARS and don't have the money nor the life stability that I probably even should be at this point. I have no place to go meet anyone right now anyway.
- Medically...Um, that's a whole other bag of suck. So, my Orthopedic doc sent me to see a Infectious Disease specialist, who took a look at me and, after talking and looking for about 15-20 minutes, outright said, "I don't know what's going on here." He's positive I did have an infection at some point in March/April, but didn't know what happened to make my symptoms go away. After a month passed, where he and my Ortho doc discussed it all more and had more looks at my x-rays and tests, he's leaning towards a sort of bad prognosis. They think the infection is still there and may be between the metal rod in my lower leg and the bone. He put me on oral antibiotics, which I'm on for the next 6 months at least, but the ramifications are potentially big. Depending on the Ortho doc and what he thinks, either no surgery will happen OR they'll have to go in, take it all back out, and clean it all out again (bad) OR the bone wall may be too weakened, not allowing for surgery, which would potentially mean losing my leg from the knee down anyway, despite all the work and pain over the last 10 years trying to salvage it. :(
So yeah...not particularly jolly lately. |

| | depressed | ] | It's been a while, but mostly nothing great to report anyway. The biggest "thing" is that for a lot of March and into April now, I've been seeing my leg doctor again because something is wrong. At first, my knee was bothering me and the doc thought it was a skin infection. He gave me some low-grade anti-biotics to take, told me to take 3-4 motrin a day to reduce any pain and swelling due to inflammation, tylenol for any fevers, and sent me on my way. That helped...for about a week. Then the fevers came back (usually 1-3 a day, typically in the high 99's-mid 100's), i've developed an intermitant cough, been eating less (I'm convinced due to all this, I've probably shrunk my stomach), and have low energy. The big thing is, though, it's potluck what I'll have on any given day. Sometimes I have more energy, but cough more. Other days, fever and no energy, but not a lot of coughing. All this time, my doc has taken a few blood tests, done x-rays, a bone scan, and a CT scan tomorrow. He's growing more concerned that it's a brewing infection in or near the metal implant, which means I'd have to go through the whole 4-6 month process I went through last time when I had it put in.
I'm NOT HAPPY. |
